Note preferences

You can change the default settings when typing notes in Tomboy. To change your note settings, open Tomboy Preferences by using your mouse to right click on the Tomboy icon in your panel, taskbar or dock, and choose Preferences and select the Editing tab. You can also open Tomboy Preferences from the Search All Notes dialog. From the menu, choose Edit ▸ Preferences.

Spell Check

Tomboy can check the spelling of your words as you type in a note. Spell check is enabled by default and Tomboy will underline any misspelled words. You can see spelling suggestions by using your mouse to right click on the misspelled word.

To disable automatic spell checking, use your mouse or the spacebar to uncheck Spell check while typing in the Editing tab of Tomboy's Preferences.

WikiWords

Tomboy can highlight words that LookLikeThis. By capitalizing multiple words together without using spaces, similar to how a wiki works, Tomboy will highlight the word and make it a link. Clicking the link will create a new note with the WikiWord as the note title.

WikiWords are disabled by default. To enable WikiWords, use your mouse or the spacebar to check the box to enable Highlight WikiWords in the Editing tab of Tomboy's Preferences.

Auto-Bulleted Lists

Tomboy can create bulleted list automatically. This option is enabled by default and when you are editing a note, typing * followed by the text and pressing Enter will automatically create a bulleted list. After pressing Enter, the next line will start with a bullet too.

To disable auto-bulleted lists, use your mouse or the spacebar to uncheck Enable auto-bulleted lists in the Editing tab of Tomboy's Preferences.

Custom Fonts

You can choose to use a font or font size in Tomboy different than the default font of your desktop. This feature is disabled by default.

To enable a different font, use your mouse or the spacebar to check Use custom font in the Editing tab of Tomboy's Preferences.

You can then press the font button and a font dialog box will appear, allowing you to choose which font you wish to use, the style, such as bold or italic, and the size of the font. Press Ok to save your selection.

Create a New Note Template

You can create a new template that is displayed every time you create a new note.

Press the Open New Note Template button in the Editing tab of Tomboy's Preferences. A new template will be displayed that looks similar to a Tomboy Note. Replace the Describe your new note here. text in the note with the text that should be the new template. Close the note to complete creating a new template. Each time you create a new note that template will be displayed in the new note.
